Quantum Speaker

Quantum Speaker represents the natural evolution of speaker and microphone simulation, advancing beyond the limitations of Impulse Responses (IRs) by capturing the full dynamic behaviour of real speakers and microphones. Rather than relying on static snapshots as an IR does, or augmenting them with algorithmic estimates, Quantum Speaker uses advanced non-linear profiling to authentically capture all the complex tonal behaviour, dynamics, and breakup that occurs across all volume levels, giving you a true-to-source sound that is staggeringly accurate to reality.

What's Inside Quantum Speaker Profiles - Non Linear

Quantum Speaker Pack

Our packs faithfully replicate the sound of a professionally recorded guitar speaker cabinet in a studio setting, providing users with unprecedented realism and versatility. Designed to accurately capture the dynamic response of speakers driven at high volumes where they truly sound their best, Quantum Speaker Packs offer a comprehensive array of profiles that perfectly reproduce the nuances of real guitar speaker cabinets recorded profesisionally.

Quick Start Profiles The Quick Start Profiles are designed for ease of use, providing immediate access to high-quality sounds with minimal setup. These profiles combine multiple mic positions to offer versatile tones right out of the box and are designed to be a quick entry into the world of true non-linear speaker simulation.

Discrete Profiles Once you have checked out the Quickstart profiles, the real fun can begin with the discrete mic profiles, these 27 detailed profiles of individual mics allow for granular control over the sound. They are extremely accurate to the sound of a real mic on the cabinet, such that you can effectively use them to create a “virtual” recording session that will closely resemble the experience of recording a cabinet in a pro studio with trained professionals setting it all up for you. Our profiles have not been post-processed or “sweetened” in any way, so you get the real gold standard: Reality.

Speaker Profiles Vs IR's

Unlike traditional IR packs that require hundreds or even thousands of files to approximate all the possible tonal shifts, Quantum Speaker offers the flexibility and control of a real recording environment with only a fraction of the number of files required. IRs cannot be blended freely or safely, as doing so can introduce phase issues and unwanted frequency shifts, yet some products encourage this. With Quantum Speaker, you CAN blend microphones seamlessly, just as you would in a physical recording environment.

Hear it all together!

If you have only used IR's in the past,  you may have become used to the highly processed sound of the majority of impulses out there. Indeed it can be hard to know what is accurate, as its easy to prefer "sweetened" sounds that no longer represent reality.. The profiles in this pack are created to be as faithful and accurate as is technically possible to the source. We have achieved null test results showing our profiles to be up to a 99.6% match to a recording of the mic and speaker they are profiling, this is only possible due to them capturing the full non-linear dynamics and behaviour of the speaker and mic.  You can try a free Quantum speaker quickstart profile for yourself in our Neutron XL pack.

Microphones

6 Microphones are selected for each pack, and for each one a variety of positions are profiled to give you a huge number of possible options to create your own signature sound. The mic choices are different in each pack, chosen to deliver the optimal results for that speaker and cabinet. There is, however an easy system to understand their puropse so you can seamlessly navigate the pack with purpose, instead of having to wade through 100s of IRs to fin d one you like. Each profile has a clear purpose, lets explore that:

Microphones Included in Neutron Quantum Speaker Packs

1.Dynamic 1: This is selected as the "default" or most commonly used dynamic mic for the speaker and cabinet in the pack. It will deliver familiar sounds that you will likely have heard on many popular recordings in a choice of positions around the dust cap on the speaker. 4 positions are provided.

2.Dynamic 2: Our engineers choose Dynamic 2 to represent a useful and interesting alternative to dynamic 1. If the speaker is particularly bright, for example, we would choose a warmer sounding alternative for dynamic 2 to give a useful and musical second option. As with dynamic 1, 4 positions are provided.

3. Condenser 1: Similarly to Dynamic 1, condenser 1 represents a gold standard of flat response and low noise that would be a very typical choice to record almost any sound source. It again represents a very widely used and familiar representation tha you would have heard many times on countless recordings. 4 positions are provided.

4. Condenser 2:  Just as with dynamic 2, we choose condenser 2 as a counter-option based on the characteristics of the speaker being represented, if the natural microphone presents a very bright sound, we would then, for example choose a  warmer sounding option for condenser 2 to provide an ideal "foil" to the default choice. This mimics what many engineers would do in the real recoding process to ensure plenty of flexibility after the recording session. 4 positions are provided.

5. Ribbon 1: We love ribbon mics.. Their ability to create characterful sonic representations of a complex sound source like a loud guitar speaker is the stuff of legend. Ribbon 1 will be a modern style ribbon mic, with a smaller ribbon and  figure 8 polar pattern to capture more of the sound in the space. â€‹5 positions are provided.

6. Ribbon 2: With a large ribbon and vintage design, this ribbin mic is the obvious choice when you want to add weight to a sound or just create a lovely warm sound from even the harshest of sources. Also figure 8 both ribbon mics can be used to recreate comples stereo, blumlein and M/S setups. 5 positions are provided.

Neutron Sub

Neutron Sub: A proprietary transducer designed specifically for Neutron Quantum Speaker Packs, delivering accurate and immersive low-frequency reproduction. Its unique design ensures precise bass response, complementing the detailed sound capture of the other microphones in the pack.

This avoids the traditional challenges of capturing the very long bass and sub bass sound waves with microphones, and lets you really bring some weight to the table when creating your own blends. The quantum sub unlocks access to low frequency information without the need to resort to destructive EQ which can lead to boomy or unclear low end detail in the sound. Even the smallest 1x12 open backed cabinet can be made to sound like thunder using this tool, this unlocks new possibilities and choices, no longer locking you into specific speakers purely because the have emphasis on bass in their design.

Neutron Guitar Room

Q speaker Room.png

Central to the realism offered by Neutron Quantum Speaker Packs is the Neutron Guitar Room—a meticulously crafted acoustic environment optimized for speaker profiling. Featuring professional sound treatment and strategic baffle placement, the Neutron Guitar Room ensures the utmost accuracy in capturing the unique sonic characteristics of each speaker cabinet

1

Mic Technique
Expertise

By strategically positioning microphones at various locations around the speaker cabinet, we capture the full spectrum of sonic flavours available, from the direct sound of the speaker cone to the ambient resonance of the recording environment or the sub-sonic thud of an amp on 11.. These mic techniques empower users to sculpt their guitar tones with precision, unlocking a world of sonic possibilities previously completely impossible to reproduce with conventional IRs. But there is more going on.. By employing professional methods and techniques in our profiling process, we can also unlock a deeper layer of utility for those who want to truly master the art of guitar tone creation

2

Enhanced Realism

Loud guitar speakers exhibit non-linear behaviors that significantly shape their distinctive sound. Harmonic distortion occurs when the speaker cone undergoes significant excursion at high volumes, generating the characteristic "overdriven" sound of electric guitars. Additionally, frequency-dependent impedance affects the interaction between the amplifier and the speaker, influencing tonal characteristics and dynamic response. Mechanical non-linearities, such as cone breakup and suspension compliance, further impact the speaker's frequency response and transient behavior. Thermal effects also play a role; as the voice coil heats up during use, its electrical resistance changes, affecting impedance and frequency response. Understanding these factors helps create accurate digital models that replicate the nuanced sonic characteristics of real-world guitar speakers.

3

In Music

Using a real guitar speaker or Quantum Speaker for recording enhances the mixing process by providing a richer, more authentic sound. The dynamic interaction between the amp, speaker, and room adds depth and realism, while natural ambience and reverb help the recording sit naturally in the mix. The harmonic complexity and unique distortion characteristics contribute to a fuller sound, and the flexibility of mic positioning allows for precise tone adjustments. Overall, real guitar speakers or Quantum Speaker improve the sonic quality and emotional impact of the mix.

Neutron Quantum Speaker is coming and it sounds REAL! Part 1 of 3 - Introduction

Detailed Description of Each Microphone Profile type

1. Cap Position Profiles: These profiles capture the direct sound emanating from the center of the speaker dust cap, delivering a pristine and articulate tonal response reminiscent of studio-grade recordings. Dynamic mics

2. Cap Off-Axis Position Profiles: By capturing the sound at an angle from the centre of the speaker dust cap, these profiles introduce spatial depth and dimension and smooth the high frequency content, Dynamic mics

3. Cap-Edge Position Profiles: Focusing on the sound emanating from the edge of the speaker dust cap where it meets the cone, this can be a more balanced sound and a warmer alternative to the dead center position. Dynamic mics, Condenser mics & Ribbon mics

4.Cap-Edge Off-Axis Position Profiles: Analogous to the cap-edge position profiles, these profiles capture the sound at an angle for the warmest dynamic position available. Dynamic mics,

5. Cone Position Profiles: These profiles capture the distinct tonal characteristics of the speaker cone area, delivering a warmer and more resonant sound with pronounced low mid and bass frequencies. Condenser mics & Ribbon mics.

6. Front Position Profiles Phase Disruptor: Positioned strategically to capture the "null zone" between speaker cones, these profiles offer a unique perspective on the recording environment, enabling creative exploration of phase interactions and spatial effects. These profiles can also be useful to create “Amp in the room” type sounds. Condenser mics & Ribbon mics.

7. Room Position Profiles: Designed to encapsulate the ambient sound of the Neutron Guitar Room, these profiles minimize standing waves and frequency alterations, ensuring a balanced and natural room sound with unparalleled realism. Condenser mics & Ribbon mics.

8. Room Off-Axis Position Profiles: Offering an alternative perspective on the room's acoustic environment, these profiles capture the room's ambience at a 90-degree angle off axis to the sound source, This creates the most "room only" sounds possible and, when combined with on-axis room positions can be used to create advanced stereo effects. Ribbon mics.
