Black Russian Big Muff — 28 Profiles
This pack contains 28 profiles of the Electro-Harmonix “Black Russian” Big Muff, a cult classic fuzz/distortion pedal produced in Russia during the late 1990s and early 2000s. Known for its darker voicing, huge low-end, and near-infinite sustain, it delivers the thick, saturated tones that defined a generation of grunge, stoner, and alternative rock.
Famously used by Steve Turner of Mudhoney, the Big Muff was central to the dirty wall-of-sound fuzz on Superfuzz Bigmuff. Its influence spread far and wide, shaping the sound of countless heavy records.
Neutron Inductor Technology
Due to its sensitivity to input impedance, the Black Russian Big Muff was captured using the Neutron Inductor, ensuring accurate pickup interaction and authentic tonal behavior. The result is a faithful recreation of its woolly, crushing fuzz — alive, dynamic, and touch-sensitive, just like plugging into the real pedal.
Drive Behaviour and Input Sensitivity
The Black Russian Muff features a non-linear gain curve where saturation rises quickly, then shifts into pure sustain. To capture this behaviour accurately, we profiled the Sustain control at four key positions per tone setting:
D0 – Minimum gain
D2 – Start of Drive Zone
D5 – Mid gain
D10 – Maximum sustain
Using NAM’s Input control, you can sweep naturally between these settings, recreating the entire gain range without hundreds of redundant profiles.
Included Profiles
Each profile is named using the format:
NC-DRV-RUSMUFF-NDX-T**-D**
T** = Tone control position (0, 2, 4, 5, 6, 8, 10)
D** = Sustain setting (0, 2, 5, 10)
Example: NC-DRV-RUSMUFF-NDX-T06-D10
= Tone set to 6, Sustain at maximum.
